Issue #4: Revise and Resubmit

Welcome fellow GC-ers to issue No. 4 of Revise and Resubmit, the Writing Center’s newsletter! This October, we’ve got some advice on how to take smarter notes, a preview of our upcoming workshops, and a writing break that will make you howl with delight.

Featured Resource: Taking Smarter Notes

How do you take notes? Do you jot things down on loose papers and lose them? Do you gather your notes into notebooks and folders for a project and then never look at them again? Do you record facts and ideas from other sources and leave out all of your great ideas and connective insights as they occur to you? It’s easy to overlook the significance of the note-taking phase, but a strong note-taking practice can be the foundation from which a vibrant and highly prolific scholarly career springs. At The Writing Center, we follow a system for note-taking, the Zettelkasten method, that prioritizes the accumulation and cultivation of your own ideas, and that keeps all notes in one place so you can consult them year after year. If you ever want to learn more about taking smarter notes, consider attending our workshop on October 30. You can also check out our curated list of videos and articles. But whatever you do, spend more time reflecting on your note-taking practices. Make sure you develop a system that help you think through and develop your ideas in addition to capturing material from the sources you’re reading.
